Stephanie (Heintz)McSweeney Obituary

Stephanie A. (Heintz) McSweeney  R.N., 78

Stephanie A. (Heintz) McSweeney, 78 a 48-year resident of Hanson passed away peacefully in her home surrounded by family and friends on December 27, 2023.

She is predeceased by her late parents Joseph and Anna Heintz (Baker) and her sister Esther Carota.  She is survived by her loving husband of 47 years, Thomas McSweeney.  Together they raised three children: their son Jesse and their daughters Molly  (McSweeney) Porter and Emily  (McSweeney) Howe.  In addition, she leaves behind her sister Claire “Lizzie” Olson (Heintz) and cousin Charles Heintz.  Stephanie was also blessed to have been the mother-in-law to James Porter and Jason Howe as well as the grandmother to James Jr., Alexandra, Thomas, Anna, and Brian Porter, as well as many nieces and nephews.

Stephanie was born in Brookline in July of 1945 and raised in Quincy, where she graduated from North Quincy High School, graduating in 1963.  From there Stephanie went on to attend Quincy City Hospital, School of Nursing, graduating in July of 1966 as a Registered Nurse.  After graduating, Stephanie returned to Quincy City Hospital as a teacher in their nursing school.  It was here that she honed her passion to always want to give back and help people, qualities that stayed with her right to the end.

In July of 1976, Stephanie married Thomas McSweeney in a garden wedding at the childhood home of Thomas in Hingham.  They were surrounded by friends and family, who to this day still speak of how lovely a day it was.  While living in Hanson the couple raised three children.  During this time, Stephanie was the director of nursing at Embassy House in Brockton and then finishing out her professional career as the Director of Nursing Services at Bay Path Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Duxbury.

However, where Stephanie found her passion was giving back to the community through various appointed board and committees as well as elected positions throughout the Town of Hanson.  She served with vigor and compassion from May of 1987 as a member of the Maquan School Improvement Council to 2003, where she finished her political career as a member of the Hanson Board of Selectmen.  During her time as an elected official, she always made it a point to make sure everyone had a voice.  She listened to everyone and ensured that their concerns were addressed; be it street safety to making sure mail was being delivered throughout the town.  Her passion for political involvement and giving back was instilled upon her son Jesse who also went on to serve on the Hanson Board of Selectmen, after she did not seek re-election.

Throughout Stephanie’s life her devotion to giving back and being there for her family and friends was unmatched.  In her later years, she loved being with her grandchildren Anna and Brian.  She will be missed by all who knew her.

Family and friend are respectfully invited to attend Stephanie’s vising hours on Thursday, January 11th from 4pm – 7pm at the Leighton MacKinnon Funeral Home, located at 4 W. Washington Street (corner of 58) in Hanson and then the funeral on Friday, January 12th at 11am at Holy Apostles Parish, St. Joseph the Worker Church, located at 1 Maquan Street in Hanson.  A burial service will be held at Fern Hill Cemetery, on High Street in Hanson.

The family would like to thank the Old Colony Hospice and Palliative Care Organization for their support throughout this process. In lieu of flowers the family would like donations made in Stephanie's memory to Old Colony Hospice 321 Manley St West Bridgewater, MA 02379. That would greatly be appreciated.
