Mavis Merrill-Duffy Obituary

Mavis (Dunn) Merrill-Duffy passed away after a brief period of declining health on May 1, 2020. She was born in Poland Maine on June 29, 1927 the daughter of the late Kenneth Dunn and the late Inez (Gould) Dunn. She was raised on the family farm in Poland Maine and graduated from Edward Little High School in Lewiston Maine in 1944. She married Kenneth Merrill of Hingham Massachusetts on August 27, 1948 and for most of their 55 years together they made their home in Halifax Massachusetts. Ken passed away on September 1, 2003. Mavis married Jack Duffy in 2005 and they had ten good years together, spending time in Fort Myers Florida and Halifax.

Mavis is survived by her son Kurt and his wife Suzanne of Ft Myers Florida and Quechee VT, Step-Children, Mimi Kozak, and Jed and Bob Duffy and by her siblings, Roberta Bird of Fort Worth Texas and Maxine Downie of Auburn Maine. She is also survived by ten grandchildren and eight great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her children Kendra (Kendy) in 1962 and K. Scott in 2014, as well as her brother Lloyd (Bill) Dunn.

Mavis was a Morgan horse enthusiast and former President of the Massachusetts Morgan Horse Association. She maintained her love and care of her Morgans past her 65th birthday. She spent countless happy hours training, exercising, riding and showing her beloved horses. Several young women with a similar love of horses got their start in the horse business under her guidance. Mavis was a 60 year member of the Halifax Congregational Church.

In lieu of flowers charitable contributions may be made in her memory to the charity of one’s choice.  A memorial service will be held at the Halifax Congregational Church 503 Plymouth St
(Rte. 106) Halifax on Saturday October 10th 2020 at 1 PM. Relatives and friends respectfully invited to attend.
