Manuel (Manny) Victor Pina

Manuel “Manny” Victor Pina passed away peacefully on September 3, 2019, at age 87. He now joins his beloved wife of 62 years, Esperanza “Chiqui” Pina, who went ahead of him on July 19 to light his path. Loves of each other’s lives, they are together again.

He was adoring father of Suzanne Cummings of Weymouth, proud and doting grandfather (“Abu”) of Lily Hope Cummings, and dear father-in-law of Jim Cummings of Whitman. Son of the late Victor Manuel and Blanca Rosa (Cruz) Pina of Cuba, he was the brother of Carlos Pina of Cuba and Maryland and his wife Nancy, and uncle to their daughters Lynn Marie and Ruth Melinda. He was also cherished by numerous brothers- and sisters-in-law and nieces and nephews on his wife’s side and countless good friends he made throughout his life, including the many wonderful nurses at N.E. Sinai Hospital in Stoughton, who cared for him so affectionately in his last years.

Like his wife, Manny was born and raised in Cuba where the couple met and were married in 1957. In the wake of the Cuban Revolution, Chiqui and “Chacho” (her pet name for him) left their island home for good in 1959 to start a new life in the U.S. and soon became naturalized citizens. For several years the couple lived in Puerto Rico, where their daughter Suzanne was born, before eventually putting down permanent roots in Massachusetts.

Here in the Bay State, Manny enjoyed a long career as an accountant, first working for CEOC (Cambridge Economic Opportunity Committee) and finally for the Boston Bar Association, from which he retired in 2000 as Comptroller after 17 years of service. Post retirement, he and Chiqui helped care for their only grandchild, Lily—a role they both treasured and excelled at immensely.

A lover of baseball since his youth in Cuba, Manny would take several buses to attend local games on the island, often arriving hours before the start so he could get a good seat. After settling with his family in Somerville, he naturally became a loyal Red Sox fan, attending his final game at Fenway and enthusiastically participating in the crowd “wave” just a few years ago.

Kind, patient, loving, soft-spoken, honest, and funny, he was so many good things. An amazing person and devoted family man, a trusted colleague and hard worker, a caring neighbor and true-blue friend. They don’t make men like Manny anymore. He was and always will be so well loved.

Visiting hours will be held from Leighton-MacKinnon Funeral Home, 4 West Washington St. (corner Rte. 58) Hanson, Friday, September 6, 2-5PM with services at 5PM in the funeral home. Relatives and friends respectfully invited to attend.
