Esperanza (Chiqui) Pina Obituary

Esperanza “Chiqui” (Gómez) Pina passed away peacefully on July 19, 2019, at age 92. She was beloved wife of 62 years to Manuel V. (“Manny,” “Victor,” “Chacho”) Pina and loving mother to Suzanne Cummings of Weymouth, mother-in-law to Jim (“Yimmy”) Cummings of Whitman, and proud grandmother (“La,” short for Abuela) of Lily Hope Cummings, whose middle name is “Esperanza” in English. Dear daughter of the late Manuel and Esperanza (Serrano) Gómez of Spain and sister to 9 siblings who predominantly settled in Florida, she is survived by Rafael Gómez and Hilda Sigler and predeceased by Manuel “Manolo” Gómez, Vicente Gómez, Rogelio Gómez, Angela “Nena” Hamel, Benito Gómez, Andres Gómez, and Victoria Gómez. She was also cherished by the husbands, wives, and partners of her many brothers and sisters, her nieces and nephews, and many close friends she made throughout the years.

Chiqui was born and grew up in Cuba, where her parents emigrated and raised their family, and where she and her beloved “Chacho” met and were married in 1957. In the wake of the Cuban Revolution, the couple fled to the U.S. in 1959 to start a new life in freedom, soon becoming naturalized citizens. They lived in Puerto Rico for over 6 years, where they had Suzanne, and eventually moved to Massachusetts where they settled. After leaving Cuba, Chiqui was instrumental in bringing most of her large, extended family legally to the U.S.

A gifted artist, Chiqui enjoyed painting, sewing, and embroidering and was also an amazing, self-taught cook. There was nothing she couldn’t do and nothing she wouldn’t do for her family. She worked in many jobs throughout her life, including as a seamstress and occasional model for Spanish designer Fernando Pena in Puerto Rico and on a factory assembly line at C&K Components, a manufacturer of electronic switches in Newton, MA, where she worked alongside her sister, Nena. Her favorite occupation, however, came after her retirement, when she and her husband helped care for their only grandchild, Lily, whom they adore.

Those of us who were lucky enough to share in her life will keep her in our hearts, remembering her as a caring, devoted, often funny, sometimes fiery but fiercely loyal, kind, and beautiful person—both inside and out.  She is already missed and will never be forgotten.

Visiting hours will be held from the Leighton-MacKinnon Funeral Home 4 West Washington St. (Corner Rte. 58)  Hanson,  Wednesday July 24th 2-5 PM with services at 5 PM in the Funeral Home.
