Obituary

Robert William Madden Jr, 70, of Hanson, Massachusetts passed away August 12, 2026 in his home.

Robert was born on April 14th, 1956 in Brockton, where he lived until moving to Hanover, where he attended and graduated from Hanover High School. After which he graduated from Massachusetts Maritime Academy in Bourne, Massachusetts. He then joined the merchant Marines, where he was able to travel the world. His career path eventually lead him to over 30 years of working for the United States Postal Service, until his retirement.

Soccer, music, and the world of J.R.R. Tolkien were some of his greatest passions in life. He spent many years both playing, and later coaching soccer at both Hanover High and Cardinal Spellman. He was often seen in the stand supporting his favorite teams, usually quite vocally. When not attending various professional and high school soccer matches, he would be attending any Santana concerts he could find his way to. Having been to over forty shows, he had a deep love and appreciation for their music. His love of music also manifested itself in his extensive collection of vinyl records, which could be counted in the thousands. And when he sought quieter moments, he often would reach for his well worn copies of "The Lord of the Rings", or "The Hobbit"

Maine held a special place in Robert's heart. Summers spent at the house in Round Pond and at the local campground meant seeing family. Many 4th of July trips participating in the parade, followed by putting on a firework display for anyone and everyone. But of all the things in his life, he was most proud of being "Papa" to his grandson, Ruben.

Robert is survived by his wife, Laurie Madden, his children, Justin Madden and Alayna Madden, his siblings Markita Ivens, and Maryanne O'Neil, his grandson, Ruben Madden, and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews.
