IN LOVING MEMORY OF
John Gregory
Maurer
January 12, 2026
John Gregory Maurer, beloved husband, father and friend released his spirit early morning of January 12th, 2026 at his Plymouth home in the presence of his loving, devoted wife Patricia Swanson Bergeron and her daughter Joelle Bergeron McCone.
John "Greg" Maurer was born at home on February 24th 1951 on Lake Street in Kingston Massachusetts on the grounds of what is now Silver Lake High School. Greg was the fourth son of William Chadwick Maurer and Agnes "Nan" Maurer and youngest brother to Don, Chad, and Rich. At an early age his father and mother instilled in Greg a strong work ethic as well as knowledge and respect for nature. As an adult Greg devoted his life to raising his children, David, Jeffrey, Nicole and Michael, while cultivating the family land that nourished his soul on Wapping Road in Kingston, MA.
Greg met "Trisha" on a blind date January 17th 1996 and married her January 17th 2013. Together they built a home and a life on the Maurer land where he played as a child. After their children left the nest the couple opened Ahh…Qua Bed & Breakfast in their home. Guests who became friends arrived from all over the world to the B&B and enjoyed Greg's stories and were mesmerized by the 4+ acres of his manicured lawn and luscious landscaping.
Greg loved his first job as a dishwasher at Howard Johnson's in Kingston and was proud that he quickly rose to management positions. He then went on to open his own restaurant, The Village Crossing in Plymouth, MA. Then came TruGreen, where he was a devoted employee that literally spread his magic on customers lawns. During his retirement Greg chauffeured for ProLimo then took a temporary custodian position at Saint Frances Xavier School. He loved pushing the "Big Broom" and got a kick out of interacting with the students. He said it was the most rewarding job he ever had. Proof was the students letters and cards that brought tears to "Mr. Maurer's" eyes upon his departure.
Greg & Trisha sold their Kingston home and downsized to Sawyers Reach in Plymouth on October 1st, 2023. Greg was saddened to leave his homeland of 50 years, but took comfort in his new garage by building a workshop, listening to music, and "The Most Impossible Question of the Day." He enjoyed spending time with his adult children, David, Jeff, and Nicole, who used their skills and wit to make their father's garage his happy place. Greg's main goal, focus, and fun was rebuilding his prized possession SCAG production mower into a yard cart to be gifted to the Maurer Land upon his death.
Greg was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in March of 2024 and tackled eighteen months of treatment while maintaining his sense of humor, stamina and determination to extend his life. His greatest asset was his capacity to sleep through twelve rounds of chemotherapy and survive the Whipple Procedure-a major surgery. All of this was accomplished while working on his bucket list, which included outings with his granddaughters: trips to the Swan Boats, their first ride on a train, and lunch at the Plymouth Airport. He continued checking off his bucket list by seeing James Taylor in concert in Saratoga, NY, with his brother; vacationing in Brewster; and consuming mass quantities of shrimp cocktail, marinated grapefruit, and fresh cranberries.
Croi Hospice entered Greg's life before and during the transitioning (nearing death) stage, prompting Trisha to call his "besties"—his long-time endearing friends as well as his only surviving oldest brother, Don, and his wife, Denise from Troy NY, to pay him a visit. All of which warmed Greg's heart. To feed his soul, Trisha catered daily to his variety of cravings. Takeout was a life-saver.
As he entered the active stage of dying, he transitioned into a comatose state and was no longer aware of his surroundings. His last three days on Earth mimicked a "Live Wake." A quiet entourage of people including his cherished step daughters Joelle and Jenna as well as close friends flowed gently to his bedside to express their last thoughts, memories and pay him homage. Greg's sons David & Jeff with their sister Nicole reminisced to soothe their father who lay peacefully before them. His diligent, faithful caregivers, Trisha and Nurses: Joelle Bergeron McCone; Deborah Swanson Ryan and Gail Swanson Molla; provided tender loving care, physical comfort in a serene environment during his final days.
Among those mourning Greg's passing are: The love of his life for the last thirty years, wife Trisha; his only surviving loving brother, Donald Maurer, wife Denise; his caring children David, Jeff, Nicole and Michael; as well as his devoted step-daughters Joelle Bergeron McCone, husband Patrick McCone and Jenna Bergeron, partner John Ward DiCroce. Also missed by The Swanson Sisters: Gail, Deborah and Lisa.
"Grampa Greg" will be terribly missed by his six adoring granddaughters and three grandsons.
John Gregory Maurer has eternal life with his predeceased parents and the brothers he adored: William Chadwick Maurer Jr. and Richard David Maurer. Greg has also been reunited with the joy of his life on Earth, his beloved dog, Riley.
Arrangements by the Leighton-MacKinnon Funeral Home, Hanson.
