IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Gertrude (Mccallum)
Runey
December 17, 2015
Gertrude "Gert" (McCallum) Runey, 91, of Hanson died unexpectedly Dec. 17 at South Shore Hospital in Weymouth.
She was the beloved wife of 66 years of the late Frank V. Runey; beloved mother of Frank J. and his wife Patty of Pembroke; Jean A. of Hanson; and Larry and his wife Debbie, also of Pembroke, and her daughter-in-law Kathy Runey of Attleboro. Gert was predeceased by her daughter, the late Carol A. Cunningham and her husband John; and by her son, the late Leo F. Runey. She was grandmother extraordinaire to eight grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Gert was predeceased by her parents William McCallum and Olive (Sawlor) McCallum, her brothers Clifford McCallum and Robert McCallum and her sisters Dorothy Miskinis and Ruth Murray.
Gert was born and raised in Boston and graduated from Dorchester High School for Girls. She and Frank lived in Dorchester until 1962 when they moved to Monponsett, where they had enjoyed a summer home throughout their marriage.
She drove a school bus in Hanson for four years, then had a 26-year career at Shaw's.
Gert's family is extremely grateful to OCES (formerly Old Colony Elder Services) and South Shore VNA for providing care that enabled her to remain independent in her home for many years. After Frank died, she became involved in the Hanson Senior Center, where she developed many wonderful new friendships at a time in life when social circles are usually shrinking. When Gert was no longer able to remain home, she moved to Wingate at Silver Lake. She flourished there due to the amazing care, support and friendship of staff and other residents.
Visiting hours will be held on Sunday, December 20th from 4-7 pm in the Leighton-MacKinnon Funeral Home 4 West Washington St., (at Rte 58) Hanson. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday at 11 AM in St. Joseph the Worker Church 1 Maquan St., Hanson, will burial to follow in Central Cemetery in Halifax. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations in Gert's memory to the Friends of the Hanson Senior Center, 132 Maquan Street, Hanson, MA 02341 or the OCES Special Needs Fund, 144 Main Street, Brockton, MA 02301
