In Loving Memory of Everett F. Dunn Jr.
July 14, 1929 – July 25, 2025 Hanson, Massachusetts
Everett F. "Sonny" Dunn Jr., 96, of Hanson, Massachusetts, passed away peacefully on July 25, following a courageous battle with kidney disease.
Born in Plymouth, MA, on July 14, 1929, Sonny was the eldest son of Everett F. Dunn Sr. and Myrtle (Chandler) Dunn. He spent his formative years in the coastal town of Duxbury, MA, alongside his brothers Norman (Rockland), George (Whitman), and Stephen (Plymouth). Later in life, his family grew to include three stepbrothers Phillip, Dennis, Richard and a stepsister, Sharon.
A graduate of Duxbury High School, Class of 1949, Sonny went on to serve honorably in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. After his military service, he pursued a career in architecture, working as a draftsman while earning his architectural license. His talent was evident early on, with personal projects including the design and construction of his family home and the Kennedy Elementary School in Franklin.
Sonny's career flourished when he joined a renowned architectural firm in Boston, where he managed major projects such as the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston. Even after retiring in the 90s, he continued as a project manager for the Tanglewood Music Center renovation.
Outside of his professional life, Sonny found deep joy in sailing. Retirement brought him to Newport, Rhode Island, where he spent countless hours aboard his cherished O'Day sailboat, exploring the waters of Rhode Island and Cape Cod.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Vassar "Mae" Shelley, in 1993. He later found love again and married Jeanette Costello of Hanson, MA, with whom he shared many joyful years.
He is survived by his son Rodney and his wife Kathleen; his son James and his wife Lisa; his daughter Shelley and her husband Adam. He was a proud grandfather to six grandchildren:Jonathan (deceased), Christopher, Stephen, Michael, Jessica and Kevin and his four great grandchildren.
If a man's worth is measured by how much he is loved, he died the richest man in town.
