IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Clare Anne
(Kenney) Chapman
January 23, 1926 – November 20, 2022
Chapman — Clare Anne Kenney, 96, died peacefully on Sunday, Nov. 20, 2022, at Notre Dame Convalescent Home, in Norwalk, Connecticut. Clare was born on Jan. 23, 1926, in Brockton, Massachusetts, to John Henry Kenney and Rena Alice English. She graduated from Radcliffe College in 1947.
In the early 50s, Clare handled public relations for Robert R. Young, who led the New York Central Railroad during and after WWII. Prior to that, she worked as an administrative assistant at the CIA. Before retiring to Cambridge, Clare worked in development at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Smith College. But her most rewarding work was as a tutor of dyslexic children and adults, a vocation that Clare, who herself had the learning disability, pursued successfully in mid- and late career.
This Brocktonian was also an inveterate traveler. A few years after the end of WWII, she backpacked through Western Europe with a childhood friend. The pinnacle of her travels came when she lived with her husband and two children in Rome for a year during the early '70s. Her former husband, John Hughes Chapman, died in 2006. Clare is survived by her son, John Alex Chapman, of Stamford, and his wife, Linda; and three grandchildren, Isabella, Isaac and Jack; and by her daughter, Catherina English Clare Chapman, of Greenwich. She is also survived by the children of her late sister, Jane Kenney Rodenbush; the children of her late cousin Carolyn Campbell Mathers and her cousin Joyce Horton and her children. A private burial in Brockton has taken place. A memorial mass will be held at a date to be announced at St. Paul's Parish in Cambridge.
